Electronic mail

Electronic mail is a form of store-and-forward computer-based messaging that enables a user to send text messages from a personal computer over a data network (such as the Internet) to one or more recipients, who collect the messages from their "mailbox" on a central server using their own personal computer or workstation. Access to email is becoming widespread in many countries, through institutional and corporate networks or Internet service providers. As network bandwidth and personal computer processing power increases, so does the ability to attach files to email messages, ranging from formatted documents to sound and graphics and even video files. Email can be used both for one-to-one and for one-to-many communication (through email distribution lists) and thus can support group interaction. For example, a tutor can use email to easily send the same message to every student in a group, and a group of students can use email to work together on an assignment.
