Multi-user object-oriented environments

MOOs are text-based environments on personal computers for real-time communication between two or more remote participants. Each participant takes on a specific role, and the environment can be configured to encourage role-playing and gaming situations. Users communicate over the Internet using special software tools available on the network, including real-time audio or real-time text chat. MOOs are beginning to be used for informal exchanges and professional learning at a distance, though not for formal courses.
