Videotape can be used to record broadcasts for later review. But thetechnology's optimal use is for programs and sequences designed for moreflexible, active use in conjunction with other course components (as withaudiotapes) or for group viewing and discussion with a tutor or animateur (as inthe tutored video instruction method used for some courses at StanfordUniversity in the United States). As with broadcast TV, videotapes can be veryuseful for showing processes, experiments, field locations, and case studies.But learners must have access, at home or in a local center, to playbackequipment (a videocassette recorder and monitor) that it is compatible with thestandard used in the original recording (NTSC, PAL, or SECAM).
