Correspondence units or workbooks are written for independent distance studyby the course designers or instructors, and tailored to the course and students.They are generally written in a personal style, as if the writer were speakingdirectly to a student (a "tutorial in print"), and are structured so that thestudent's reading corresponds to the agreed study schedule for the course (eachunit might correspond to eight hours' work or a week's work, for example). Awell-designed unit contains explicit study objectives, a clear table ofcontents, a glossary of any new or technical terms introduced, completedexamples, and many in-text activities, such as exercises and self-assessment andreview questions. Students may be encouraged to annotate the units with theircomments and answers to exercises and quizzes, and then compare their responseswith model answers or instructor's comments at the end of the unit.
