Special supplements or regular items in national newspapers—sometimes inconjunction with radio and other mass media—have often been used inlarge-scale distance education programs in such subjects as health care andrural development or in national in-service teacher training programs. Usingnewspaper distribution networks is often the most cost-effective way of gettingeducational material to large numbers of readers. Newspapers are also used as avehicle for communication and contact between and among students, coursedevelopers, tutors, and instructors, and in-house student newspapers aresometimes used to provide general information on an institution's courses.
