Data & Statistics

EdStats is the World Bank's comprehensive database of education statistics, making a variety of national and international data sources (such as UIS and OECD) available in one location. EdStats compiles World Bank data on pertinent education topics and adopts an analysis-friendly format that enables flexible access and custom-tailored reports. Features of EdStats include:
  • Global Country Data: presents data for more than 200 countries. The education data in this module is mainly provided by UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS). There are four sections in this module of EdStats: (1) Summary Education Profiles which provide key comparable education indicators as a starting point for a more in-depth analysis of education within countries or in project contexts; (2) Comparative Perspectives enable the comparison of individual countries with different country groups; (3) Country Group Data presents averages and medians for the regional and income groups; and (4) the Data Query System allows flexible retrieval of the country data from the database.

  • Selected Group Data: presents statistical reports from different groups of countries. The country groups currently in EdStats include Caribbean Countries, South Eastern European Countries, Islamic Countries, OECD Countries, and Countries that have participated in the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and World Education Indicators (WEI) programs.
  • Thematic Education Data: presents diverse topics, including Projections of School Age Population, Private Education Expenditures, Rates of Returns to Investment in Education, Gender Disaggregated Profiles, Children with Disabilities and Inclusive Education, and Student Learning Assessments. The main data sources are World Bank, OECD, UIS and special studies and research projects.
  • Education MDGs: presents data and information related to Millennium Development Goals, including data on country EFA Financing Simulation Models. The data is mainly from the World Bank.
  • World Bank Lending: offers information on World Bank lending for education since 1963.
  • Country at a glance: offers country data on selected indicators of poverty and social development, key macroeconomic ratios and long-term trends, structure of the economy, prices and government finance, trade, balance of payments, and external debt and resource flows. Data was compiled by the World Bank in collaboration with its partner agencies and country clients.
  • Links to Other Sources: provides a large number of links to international and national education and statistical agencies, education journals and databases, and other information related to education. Links were compiled by the EdStats Team.
