Overview
The knowledge revolution brings with it a threat of a
widening gap between developed and developing countries,
with disparities in access to knowledge and information
reinforcing existing disparities in resources. The World
Bank has an important role to play in assisting
countries to prepare for the knowledge economy so that
they can exploit the opportunity of the knowledge
revolution and not fall behind in a "digital
divide." The World Bank Group and its partners help
countries make decisions regarding technology to improve
access, quality and equity of education.
Global Distance Education Network (Global DistEdNet)
Global DistEdNet provides a coherent and comprehensive
guide to distance education. It is intended primarily
for use in the developing country context, but is also a
valuable resource for educators and policy makers in all
settings who are concerned with increasing educational
access and improving educational quality through the use
of distance education. Access: http://www.worldbank.org/disted/.
Globalization and rapid technological change have made
knowledge a critical determinant of competitiveness in
the world economy. Countries able to seize the
opportunities created by innovations in science,
communications and computing technologies may be able to
"leapfrog" in industries such as
telecommunications, power generation.......more.
