Education Roundtable in Singapore - 17 Sept. 2006

World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz and African Development Bank President Donald Kaberuka co-chaired a special ministerial roundtable on education during the World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Singapore on September 17, 2006. The gathering brought together finance ministers from donor and developing countries as well as representatives from multilateral agencies and civil society organizations.

The meeting focused on the progress that Finance Ministers from developing countries have made in preparing long term plans to achieve the education millennium development goals. It  provided an opportunity both for an update from those African countries who committed at Abuja, Nigeria, in May to take the lead in preparing their own plans for development, and for Asian finance ministers to discuss their experience toward achievement of universal primary education by 2015.

The roundtable considered the key messages from the recent review of the Fast Track Initiative as a key mechanism to support the preparation of these plans and achieve results in the education sector. The review showed that, with political will, the right policies, and adequate finance – remarkable progress can be made.
