The World Bank's work in the education sector comprises
efforts in many sub-sectoral areas, presented below under 2
themes. The themes address the Bank's dual objectives of
helping countries achieve Education for All (EFA) and helping
them develop a strong and flexible workforce with the advanced
skills needed to compete in today's knowledge-driven
societies. The nature of the teams working on each theme
varies considerably. Active communities of practice, for
example in tertiary education as well as the multi-partner
girls' education, early child development, and school health
teams, help bring together internal (within the Bank) and
external practitioners and foster sharing of knowledge and
best practice. Broader, less closely defined teams, on the
other hand, serve more as an umbrella, albeit less
interactive, knowledge sharing function.

Tertiary Education
|
|
|
The knowledge-based economy is having a profound impact on all
societies, including developing countries. This is a
particularly important development for the tertiary education
sector, as it must adapt to related educational needs throughout
the world. The capacity for countries to adopt, disseminate, and
maximize rapid technological advances is dependent on adequate
systems of tertiary education.
