The Global HIV/AIDS Program

The Global HIV/AIDS Program was created in
2002 to support the World Bank's efforts to
address the HIV/AIDS pandemic from a cross-sectoral
perspective. The program offers global
learning and knowledge sharing on approaches
and best practices to addressing HIV/AIDS. A
key function of the Global HIV/AIDS Program
is to lead the monitoring and evaluation
efforts of UNAIDS (the Joint United Nations
Programme on HIV/AIDS) partners at country
level.
|
The Global HIV/AIDS Program supports the
World Bank in its efforts to mainstream
HIV/AIDS into all sectors. The Program is
actively working to:
- Strengthen the Bank's capacity to
respond to the needs of national
governments, civil society and other
stakeholders;
- Share and expand available knowledge
about effective approaches to HIV/AIDS,
and develop new approaches;
- Improve the quality of monitoring and
evaluation, and build capacity in this
area among partners working in
AIDS-related projects and programs at
country level

As one of eight
co-sponsors of UNAIDS,
the Bank is playing a key role in shaping
the global response to the HIV/AIDS
epidemic. On January 1, 1996, UNAIDS began
its expanded, multi-sectoral United Nations
response to HIV/AIDS, which has since
expanded to a partnership inclusive of
governments, NGOs, and the private sector.
The eight co-sponsoring organizations are the United
Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP),
the United
Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United
Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO), the World
Health Organization (WHO), the United
Nations International Drug Control Programme
(UNDCP), the International
Labor Organization (ILO) and the World
Bank. This year the World Bank Chairs the
Committee of Cosponsoring Organizations (CCO)
of UNAIDS.
