Do Leaders Matter? National Leadership and Growth since World War II

Date: Monday, April 16, 2007
Time:
12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Location: MC3-101
Speaker: Professor Ben Jones, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University

Do leaders matter for economic growth? To answer this question, Prof. Jones examines whether growth rates change when leaders change. In particular, he will discuss methodolgy for determining if leader transitions cause changes in growth rates. He finds robust evidence that leaders matter for growth. The effects of individual leaders appear strongest in autocratic settings where there are fewer constraints on a leader’s power. Leaders also appear to affect policy outcomes, particularly monetary policy. The results suggest that individual leaders can play crucial roles in shaping the growth of nations.
