Moldova is
a small, densely populated country with an agriculture-based economy.
It is situated on the western edge of the Commonwealth of Independent
States (CIS), and has a population of 4.3 million people and a
1999 GNP per capita of US$3701. Under the Soviet Union's command
economy, Moldova specialized in raw and processed foodstuffs,
but also developed a diversified manufacturing sector based on
the widely dispersed product chain common in the Soviet system.
Today, agriculture and agro-processing still represent 40 percent
of GDP. Moldova imports virtually all its primary energy needs,
mainly from the Russian Federation.
