From June 16-18, a multisectoral team from the
World Bank (Social Funds Team in Human Development, the
Bank-wide Community Driven Development (CDD) Anchor in ESSD,
Decentralization Group in PREM and WBI), together with the
German Development Bank (KfW), the German Federal Ministry for
Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the
Inter-American Foundation, hosted the International Conference
on Local Development at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington,
DC.
Over 550 participants - representing social
funds and other CDD programs, local, state, and national
governments, civil society, donor agencies, scholars, and
others - from 89 countries joined. The Conference offered an
opportunity to network, and share knowledge, with a focus on
development of a conceptual framework and shared vision for
local development that integrates lessons from CDD and social
fund approaches as well as from decentralization/public sector
reform strategies.
